Project Overview:

This colorful, award-winning, living room was part of a complete home re-design. The family is young and active and had a living room that did not represent them well and therefore didn’t get used very often. This is the room that you see when you first walk into the home and the family wanted a space to welcome people and invite them to sit down. The parents have three pre-teen and teenage daughters and wanted the room to feel like they belonged there too. In addition, they wanted to include a piano that had been in the family room to create a music area as the girls play the piano and other instruments.

Problems addressed

The homeowners said that they like to decorate but never really finish off a room and so wanted some finished spaces. They asked for up-to-date furniture with a younger appearance. They were also concerned about the glare and lack of privacy from the windows. There was also inadequate lighting in the room.

Kathy’s solutions

The family worked closely with Kathy to make their vision come to life. The room feels young and welcoming without being too trendy. It has a casual elegance. We started with a bold floral fabric then pulled in various pieces from that color palette. Kathy incorporated plenty of seating, adding a good sized ottoman as a coffee table but to add extra seating when necessary. Or just put up your feet! Lamps were added around the room using three-way bulbs for control, important for the different tasks being performed in the living room. The windows were dressed with colorful panels, closing for privacy, and sheers to reduce the sun’s glare. A nice soft rug and rug pad were selected as the girls and their friends like to sit on the floor.

In the end, the family have a fresh, young and classic living room which is used daily for homework, music practice, and hanging out with friends and family.
